Oktoberfest and The Best German Alkoholfrei Beers

Posted by Ted Fleming on

Each year people from all over the world flock to Munich to celebrate Oktoberfest, the wonderful 16-day festival beginning in September and drawing to a close in the first weekend of October. Since 1810 this festival has been a staple in German culture and the parades, dancing, singing, food and most importantly beer have become a worldwide celebration. There are similar festivals held in 17+ countries, the largest celebration outside of Germany takes place in Kitchener-Waterloo, not far from our Premium Near Beer headquarters.

In 1810 the first festival was held to celebrate a royal wedding with the event including horse racing. A decision to repeat the horse races on the same site in 1811 created the annual event. Over the years the festival grew and in 1896 beer stands were replaced by beer tents and halls. Beer and traditional Bavarian food have been the staple ever since. In 2013 7.7 million litres of beer were consumed. The festival kicks of with “the beer barrel tapping” in which the Lord Mayor of Munich taps the first barrel of the celebration at exactly noon in the Schottenhammel tent.

Since 1950 the costume and riflemen parade has been a highlight of the festival. This parade honors the silver wedding anniversary of King Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess. In 1835 Bavarian novelist Maximillian Schmidt organized another parade, this time with 1400 participants. This annual parade is held on the first Sunday of the celebration and is 7 KM in length, finishing up at the fair grounds.

This year the festival in Munich will take place from September 16 to October 3rd and you're sure to find alkoholfrei versions of most of the beers being poured. The Canadian replica in Kitchener-Waterloo will be held from October 7-15.

During this time we are highlighting some of the best German non-alcoholic beers.
